Super Ego and the overactive conscience

I have been recently studying the Freudian conepts in my psychiatric part of my medical education and it is interesting to examine a past struggle for me in light of some of the concepts he has come up with..

Three of the concepts that Freud put forth had to do with Id, Ego and SuperEgo.

Id is base, primal nature that drives all of us football maniacs, deerhunters, hockey players, and construction workers. The my team is better than your team and we will prove it to you by hitting you "right in the mouth". True football players love nothing more than a game played in "slop". A wet, muddy, nasty field with mud-caked pants and bloody knees and "INCREDIBLE" hits you can hear up in the Nose-bleed sections. WE LOVE IT! yah what a hit!! nevermind the poor dude that is wondering where is mind is at...we'll take care of him later..but that hit was "AWESOME"...

Ego is what keeps football players etc... from doing the same thing off the field as we just got done doing on it...One place is acceptable, another is not...Ego should help you figure out the two...Granted a lot of us would love to at times follow our id and complete an extreme "HIT" in the streets as well but its not an "acceptable" place to do it..

SuperEgo is the overiding umbrella that keeps the Id and the Ego in their proper places. Freud was basically describing our conscience..Our superego does the things that are right for right's sake, not for our own benefit necessarily, but for what "feels right". Worldly Altruism--the unexplainable God given desire to do the "right thing"

The problem with the world is that the majority of people seem to live in the Ego world and the more base the world becomes this continues to be a problem. People do not live by their superego-their conscience for the most part...They live for themselves and for primarily what they can get away with. In fact I would venture to say that for many people in todays's world the super ego has become so thin as to be non-existent in spots..(at least the media would have us believe this)

There is another sect of society albeit a minority that has the opposite problem..It is an ultra-thick superego..its so thick that rather than it governing the id and ego..it dictates everything we do and everything that comes from the id and ego to even function in life gets struck down as bad and condemnation worthy, so this person who has this super thick ego..looks righteous and holy and "happy" because they never cuss, steal, tell a bad joke, etc...but they are miserable and live in constant fear of everything but mostly in fear of what they will be condemned of next.. . They form a reaction against what they percieve as bad..A sense of doom pervades their thoughts constantly. As they grow up and their superego is strengthened, they find they become extremely judgmental of others who are doing things that they would never be able to do...They walk around judging others all the time and feeling self-righteous about it..They are MISERABLE...in fact many people like this end up on medication to alleviate this oversensitivity.

I know that God's Word in society and people not afraid to say what is right and truth is the answer for the superego dissappearance. But I can say for the person with the overactive conscience I think the solution is getting a little more of the id out in the open.. For a man, its back to that earthy, competition kick em in the mouth, might makes right kind of mentality. For a woman it may be in beautifying herself and making herself appear more attractive..and oh the groans that come from the conservative element when I say that...but you know, the people that are making the rules in those settings don't have a problem with letting their id and ego come soaring through and calling it their mandated from above duty to hold back the tide of worldliness...and yet it doensn't hold up with what we have been given as God's creatures..where He says he has given us all things to enjoy...

OK so there you have it..my take on the ID, EGO and the superego.....

TIM TEBOW: 

The man who continues to amaze and madden the sports elite.

How do you explain why people like him so much and why in spite of how much the "experts" say he is not an NFL quarterback and is not "cut-out" for the big League, he just keeps hanging around and now it looks like he is going to gain another job with the Eagles?

I have several theories about the intrigue that surrounds Tebow-mania and why it is so fun to watch the media elites fall over themselves trying to get him canned.

One is God is refining him and he doesn't really answer to the gods of the NFL, He answers to the God of the FLU (The Football League of the Universe). 

Its the reason that Tebow says that he knows WHO holds his future because in spite of what everyone else, God is going to get his man ready for what He wants Tebow to do and I would say already God has accomplished a lot with Tebow in the nfl.

The funny thing is that God is using these "haters" to make him better.

Fun to watch.

I predict that perseverance will pay off.

After the long hiatus..

Greetings all..I return to the world of blogging after an almost 3 year hiatus..a little update I graduated..I am now a "doc" I chose psychiatry...I am working on being a "shrink" I live in TX.... Still have not paid for medical school...but you never know This blog will soon shift gears..Stay tuned.

Graduation is nearing

Graduation is now only 360 days away. May 12th. Woefully still short of the million ideas and woefully short of paying for this beast. Finishing core rotations next week. Going to Pensacola FL. in two weeks. Residency choices are FM, IM, or Psychiatry with leanings towards IM at this point.
